Iron ore is experiencing a renaissance in northwestern Ontario.

Driven by Indian and Chinese industrial demand, new companies are reexamining some old deposits that have sat dormant since the 1980s or longer.

“It’s a resurgence of all metals,” said Mark Smyk, regional manager for the Ontario Geological Survey (OGS) in Thunder Bay, “but iron really stands out.”

World crude steel production reached 1,527 megatonnes (Mt) for the year of 2011. This is an increase of 6.8% compared to 2010 and is a record for global crude steel production.

All the major steel-producing countries apart from Japan and Spain showed growth in 2011. Growth was particularly robust in Turkey, South Korea and Italy.

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported Tuesday that US steel mills shipped 7.9 million net tons (nt) of steel products in October, a 0.2 percent drop from September shipments but a 19.7 percent surge from the 6.6 million nt shipped in October 2010.

Goldman Sachs & Partners Australia Pty raised its forecasts for iron ore prices from 2012 to 2015 on concern supplies from Brazil, the world’s second-biggest exporter, will be lower than expected.

Mr Malcolm Southwood a Melbourne based analyst for Goldman Sachs in a report said that the price of ore delivered to China from Australia, the biggest shipper of the steelmaking raw material, will average AUD 150 a metric tonne next year, up from a forecast of AUD 140 a tonne.

China Knowledge reports according to China new steel industry blueprint for its 12th 5 year Plan estimates it could go as high as 1.13 billion tonnes over the next three years.

1. Last year, China consumed 920 million tonnes of iron ore. The country imported 618 million tonnes of iron ore from 40 countries last year, which accounted for 67% of the total consumption up from 35% ten years ago.

2. In the first ten months, China iron ore imports grew 10.9%YoY and its domestic output of the mineral grew at a fast pace of 26.4%.

Shipping of iron ore on the Great Lakes is up 8 percent from a year ago, according to the Lake Carriers' Association. This is a positive sign for the maritime industry in the Great Lakes area, an industry that already provides more than 100,000 American jobs.

Iron ore demand was expected to grow by 40 percent in the medium to long term, propelled by China, according to the chief executive of Anglo American’s Minas Rio project in Brazil, Stephan Weber.

He said the challenge remained finding high quality assets to meet that demand.

Weber was speaking to journalists during a sponsored tour of the Brazilian assets of diversified mining company Anglo last week.
